Etymology

'Hazel spring', v. hæsel (cf. Merc. hesel , ON  hesli), wella (cf. Merc. wælla ). Popular tradition associated the p.n. with a well by the roadside in Heswall village, called the Hessle Well , cf. Sheaf3 1 (89).
