Etymology

'Marigold stream', v. golde , burna . Cf. Golborne David supra , Golborne Bellow 95infra . The stream is Golborne Brook 126.Here should be noted the lost Golborne Hundred, hundred de Golborne 1246 Tab, the hundred court of the lord of Cheshire at Goldeburn 1290 Ipm ii478, hundred of Goldebourne 1290 ib 459, hundred courts of Golbourne 1363 BPR iii460, v. hundred . To this hundred the manors of Shocklach, Duckington, Pulford, Waverton and Eccleston owed suit, v. NRA 3636, No. 276, and Sheaf3 17 (3938). There seems no reason to suppose a minor hundred here, since Golborne was not the seat of a barony (cf. Malpas Hundred 39supra , Halton Hundred 22,) and the manors which chance to be on record as owing suit do not fall into a recognizable fee. They are miscellaneous manors of Broxton hundred. The hundred at Golborne was a court of the earldom of Chester, not of a subordinate barony. It seems very likely that the Court which met at Golborne was that of Broxton Hundred, except the manors in peculiar jurisdiction. The meeting-place might have been Golbournford at Golborne Bridge infra , where at least one Inquisition of Broxton Hundred was taken (1359Indict , printed Sheaf3 20 (4695)). The meeting at Golborne and not at Broxton 12supra may have been to accommodate the minor hundred jurisdiction at Malpas 39supra , as being a suitable place outside the Malpas barony but still in Broxton hundred. There is no evidence to show whether Golborne was selected for some other reason, perhaps as the site of Dudestan hundred in which Golborne would have been central. Cf. Broxton Hundred 1supra .
