Etymology

'Rock island', v. stān , ēg . The district of Great Stanney and Little Stanney comprised the marshland south of the rocky promontory of Stanlow 185infra , between R. Gowy and the Mersey estuary. The stān-ēg would be Stanlow, which would, originally, have been part of Great Stanney. The two parts of Stanney are distinguished as Little-, or Higher- (180supra ) and Great-, or Lower-, v. grēat , maior , magna , inferior .
