Etymology

'Wīgmund's homestead', from the OE  pers.n. Wīgmund (Feilitzen 413) and hām. The earlier form of the p.n. is compounded by the gen.sg. of the pers.n., uninflected in 1281 Court 36. The later form appears to contain -ing-, but the palatalization is analogous with the -inga or -ing 2 formation of the other Ch -ingham p.ns., v. Altrincham 7supra . The development of the form Wincham was noted by Leycester (1669), 'This township in Dooms-day book is written Wimundesham,…In old deeds it is written Wimingham, but now usually called and written Wincham, or Winsham', Orm2 i627.Wincham formerly included the hamlet of Twambrook 195infra , on the south side of Peover Eye, in Northwich Hundred.
