Etymology

'Stronghold or fortified house by a lake', v. mere 1 , burh , named from Budworth Mere 108 supra . Cf. Leycester (1666), 'This hamlet …comprehendeth onely the manor-house, with the demain lands thereunto belonging' after which he cites the etymology, quoting Verstegan, v. Orm2 i633.
