Etymology

'Valley or stream of the Britons', v. Cumbre (gen. pl. Cumbra ), bece 1 , bæce 1 , but DEPN observes that the first el. could be the OE  pers.n. Cumbra ('Welshman'). The village stands in a hollow beside a small brook running into Budworth Mere.
