Etymology

'Sprow's farm', from the OE  pers.n. Sprow (Redin 35), v. tūn .The later name contains hyrst 'a wood, a hill', but the origin of the first el. is uncertain. Analogy with Carden 325infra is topographically unlikely. It may be the gen.sg. of a wk.masc. OE  pers.n. *Carda as in Cardington Sa (DEPN s.n. Cardeston). It is probably 'marsh valley', v. kjarr , denu . The 'marsh valley' may be the depression occupied by Park Moss infra (101-660817). Garnersgate Lane (101- 653817 to 653813) may contain Cardenhurst and gata , 'lane to Cardenhurst pasture-allotment'.
