'Smith's enclosure' from PrWelsh  *goƀ , OWelsh  *gob , MWelsh  gof 'a smith' and worð, cf. Gawton, Goveton D 223, 318. The first el. may be used as a pers.n. here, cf. the surnames Goff (e ), Gough , v. DEPN and ES 64, 221.
