Etymology

Edgin Cotes (lost), Edgin Cotes 1844TA , Huchenescote , Ichincote 1265–91 Chest, Hychenescote c.1310 ib, Ichyncote 1440Rental , Edencote 1539 Dugd, Edencot 1579 ib, Idencoate 1546 ib, Idencote 1579 ib, 1657, 1692Chol , Indecote 1553 Pat. The first spelling indicates 'Huchon's cottage', from cot and the ME  (OFr ) pers.n. Huchon , diminutive of Hugh , but Professor Löfvenberg notes that the others indicate the ME  pers.n, Hychen , diminutive of Hich , a pet-form of Richard (cf. John Hychen (Wa) 1332, v. Reaney s.nn. Hitch , Hitchen ), and advises that the first spelling may be a scribal error. The place belonged to St Werburgh's Abbey, Chester, cf. Abbot's Clough infra , Addenda xvi supra .
