Etymology

v. wæfre , tūn . The significance is uncertain, but is probably either 'farm at a waving tree' or 'farm at a quaking bog' (cf. Moss infra ).The same name appears at Waverton 327infra , Warton St (Duignan 160), Wa 23, Wharton He (DEPN), La 43, and cf. Waverley Sr 174.DEPN s.n. Waverley suggests from analogous continental p.ns. that the el. waver - means 'brushwood'. The forms rule out a derivation from R. Weaver 138, beside which Wharton stands. It is distinguished from Waverton by relation to Bostock 202supra , Over, Middlewich and Clive 326, 240, 234infra . 'The other' (Lat  alter ) or 'Little-' (v. lȳtel ) is distinguished from 'Old-' Wharton (v. ald ).There were two manors here TRE, v. Orm2 iii264.
