Etymology

'The great farmstead', from stórr1 and ON  tún or OE  tūn, with grange , hall , hyll , loge , quarriere and various affixes. Storeton Lodge was Storeton Cottage 1842 OS. Storeton Hall, an ancient house, is mentioned c.1536 Leland V225 as 'the Lorde Stourton 's howse in Stourton 'c.1536 Leland V225. The form Stortton appears to contain as first el. ON  storð 'a young wood, a plantation, land growing with brushwood'. There is no evidence which would identify una bovata terre in Stortone quam Wlfricus tenebat 1154–81 Chest, 'one bovate of land in Storeton which Wulfrīc used to hold', with the land on Wirhalum 'in Wirral' mentioned in the will of Wulfrīc Spot 1002 ASWills 46. Wulfrīc is not an uncommon pers.n., cf. terra Wlfrici prepositi foris portam de North 1119 (1280), 1150 Chest 'Wulfrīc the reeve's land outside Northgate (Chester)'.
