Etymology

Tranmere Pool (lost, 109–330882 to 322885), 1842 OS, The Pool 1831 Bry, 1842 OS, Birkett Pole 1552 Sheaf, Birkett Poole 1659 ib, Berkitpool 1757 ib, Birket Pool 1818 ib, Birkenhead Pool 1824Lawton , 'the creek or pool at Birkenhead or Tranmere', a creek of Mersey, v. pōl 1 , cf. Birkenhead 313infra . The Birket (r.n.) 115. Hereabouts would be Raynildes Pool 1330 Sheaf3 43 (9082), 'Ragnhild's pool', from the ON  fem.pers.n. Ragnhildr and pōl 1 . About 109–330872 was another creek of Mersey, Gonell 's Pool , Gonelly Pool 1885 Sheaf (Gonnille Pool (lit. Gomulle Pool ) 1529 (17) Orm2, Gonell 's Pool , Gonall 's Pool 1552 Sheaf, Gunnel Pool 1800 ib), 'Gunnil's pool', from the ON  fem.pers.n. Gunnhildr and pōl 1 , cf. Orm2 ii548, Sheaf3 49 (9874).Tranmere Pool is now lost in the docks which were built in it; the stream above it is drained, its valley gives name to Dingle Rd infra and The Valley Lodge in Devonshire Park.
