Etymology

Umberstone Covert (109–317833), Storeton Fox Cover 1831 Bry, named from Umberstone 1839TA , Homilston '13AddCh , campus de Homelstones 1300–27ib , campus de Hunbulston 1318JRC , campus de Homelston 1323AddCh , 'two acres of waste in Homelston ' next to the heath of Brimstage '1343AddCh 66279. This f.n. was quoted as Umlisons 1896 Sheaf3 1 (117), with the hint of a Celtic etymology on account of flints found in a mound of sand. The true etymology is 'mutilated stone or rock', from hamol and stān . This could refer either to a natural outcrop of the local rock (which is quarried at Storeton), or to some lost megalithic archaeological feature.
