Spital, Spital Hall, Spital Old Hall (109–340830) [ˈspit, ˈspitəl], le Spitel (l )1347, 1357, 1385ChFor et freq with variant spellings (le ) Spytell , (le ) Spytyll , (le ) Spetyll , (le ) Spitill , (le ) Spittell (e ), (le ) Spyttle , (le ) Spittle to Spittell 1819 Orm2, Spittle 1842 OS, Spittale 1840TAMap 75, Spittle in Wirral 1597 Orm2, 'the hospital', v. spitel . This was a lazar-house, (versus ) domos leprosorum 1270–83 Chest, domus leprosorum de Bebynton 1283 Dugd, 1286ChFor , (a ) domibus quondam leprosorum de Bebinton 1300–20JRC . It appears to have been associated with the older foundation, St Thomas the Martyr's chapel, cf. Chapel Dale infra .The hospital was at Spital Old Hall (v. ald , hall ), cf. Spittle Green & Spittle Hay 1843TA v. grēne 2 , (ge)hæg.
