Etymology

'Farm by a pool or creek', v. pōl 1 , pull , tūn , cf. Bromborough Pool 241supra , Dibbinsdale Brook infra . The manorial suffix is the surname, occasionally confused with the ME  (OFr ) pers.n. Lancelot , of the Lancelyn family, lords of this manor 12th to 16th centuries, whose castle was at Poulton Hall, v. Orm2 ii440. Poulton Hey and Royd (v. (ge)hæg, rod 1 ) appear to be modern names; the latter is certainly not a local dialect form. v. Addenda.
