Etymology

'Haneca's mound', from an OE  pers.n. Haneca and hlāw. The form Hunkene - arises from confusion of OE  gen.sg. -an (ME  -en ) with OE  gen.pl. -ena (ME  -ene ). For the -y -, -i - spellings see Botterley (in Faddiley) 143infra . The pers.n. appears in Hankerton W 59, Hankford D 92, Hankham Sx 447. Coole Hall 139infra was part of this township.
