Etymology

'The new hall', 'hall in a wood', v. nīwe , hall , wudu . This was a new house built by the lords Audley e.1227. It was fortified, probably with a peel-tower. Leland v 25 states 'There was a place of the Lorde Audelays in Chestreshire betwixt Cumbremere and Nantwiche caullid Newhaule Tower . It is now downe. There be motes', cf. Moat Meadow 1845TA , (v. mote ), and castrum de Nova Aula 1276, 1283 Ipm, tower of Newehalle 1322 ChancW (v. tour 'a turret, a castle- tower'). Combermere 93supra and Aston infra are adjacent, but Marbury 106infra is beyond Wrenbury 119infra . The additions distinguish this from Newall 2208.
