Etymology

'Enclosure made of hurdles' or 'with a hurdle', v. hyrdel , -es 2 , tūn , cf. Hurdsfield 1106. Professor Löfvenberg suggests that the first el. in these p.ns. may be an OE  *hyrdels (< PrGer *hurðislaz ) 'a hurdle', which might have existed by the side of OE  hyrdel like OE  gyrdels beside OE  gyrdel 'a girdle'. Ekwall (DEPN) is misleading upon this name. The spelling Hurdlaston 1325 in DEPN 258 is an error copied from BM 1 390, for Hurdleston 1325 (1420) AddRoll 6278, and should not be used as the basis of etymology.
