Etymology

If Horse - represents a genitive form, this p.n. might be 'Hoar's part of Poole', from Poole supra with a manorial affix from the surname of William le hare of Pulle 13 (1580) Sheaf3 20 (4698), v. hār 2 'grey, hoary'. Another member of this family is Richard Canutus of Pulle 13AddCh 49787 (Lat. canutus 'having grown grey- haired'). Cf. foll. However, in view of the rarity of genitive forms as compared with Barrets -Poole supra , Dr von Feilitzen thinks the first el. is not a manorial affix. He suggests horu or horh , the p.n. being 'dirty, muddy pool' as contrasted with White -Poole infra , 'white, clean pool'.
