Etymology

'Lane at Coole', from lane and Coole supra . Coole Pilate, Coole Hall Fm and Coole Lane comprise a district of about four square miles in this and Newhall townships, v. 102supra , partly in Acton, Audlem and Wrenbury parishes. It would seem the whole area comprised the 'forest' or 'wood' of Coole in the earlier references under Coole Pilate supra . The p.n, Coole is 'cow hill', from and hyll , [kuːhyl, kuːhul] > [kuːil, kuːul] > [kuːəl] > [ku:l], with lēah 'a clearing, a wood', whence the old forms Cowle (e ), Cou (e )l (l )e (e ), [ˈkuːəl ˈlɛi] > [kuːlɛi]. The suffix Pilate is pil-āte 'pill oats', presumably from their being grown there. It distinguishes that part of Coole which is not included in Newhall township.
