Etymology

The ancient parish consisted of 1. Cheadle (now included in Cheadle cum Gatley c.p., except Cheadle Heath, Edgeley and part of Adswood, now in Stockport county borough c.p.), 2. Handforth cum Bosden (Handforth now included in Wilmslow c.p., and Bosden, a detached part of the township five miles to the north-east surrounded by Stockport parish (v. note, 253 infra ), now divided between Stockport county borough and Hazel Grove cum Bramhall c.ps).
