Etymology

Hoback Fm is Holebec 1224FF , Hobeck 1624Christ 's , Hoback 1821 Baker. Cf. Holbekmede 1513Christ 's . This is named from a stream Ho back 1635 ib. which must be the unnamed small tributary of the Cam or Rhee flowing not far from the farm. Cf. also Hoback Fm in Wimpole (infra 82) and Gransden Brook supra 6. The second element in these names is perhaps OE  bece, 'stream,' later replaced by Anglo-Scandinavian beck , v. bece , bekkr .
