Etymology

This is a difficult name. Smith (PN NRY 34–5, s. n. Terrington), citing the parallels of this name, Tyersall (WRY) and Teversall (PN Nt 135–6), notes that all these places are in Anglian territory, and suggests that they contain an OE *T ofer , an r -derivative of the name- theme Tēof which is found in the Anglian personal name T oful , recorded in Bede. Ekwall (DEPN) suggests the possibility that the first element may be an OE  tīefrere (tēfrere ), 'painter,' perhaps in the sense of 'one who marks sheep.' The second element is hām .
