Etymology

'Swǣf 's landing-place,' v. hȳð . Swǣf is found in Swæfesheale BCS 762 and is a short form of names in Swǣf -. Cf. Sacombe (PN Herts 137), DB Sueuechāp from Swǣfa . It is just possible that we have here 'the Swabian's landing-place,' cf. Swaffham supra 134. Alan de Rohan held land in Swavesey in 1237 (Fees). For the loss of final th cf. Odsey supra 62.
