Etymology

'The low-lying land of the people of Scēne ,' v. inga , ēg . OE  Scēne , Scīene is perhaps found in Scynes weorþ BCS 820. It is related to OGer  Scōnea (FörstemannPN 1306) and is derived from OE  sc (ī )ene , 'beautiful' or is a pet-form for such a name as Scēnwulf (LVD) (cf. OGer Sconolf loc. cit.) containing this element. Cf. Shinfield (Berks), DBSelingefelle , 1167 P Schiningefeld , and Shingham (Nf), DBScingham . For the initial consonant v. IPN 103, 113.
