Mark's Grave

Early-attested site in the Parish of Linton

Etymology

Mark's Grave may be associated with “terra quondam Johannis Marke de London iac. in Stonstrett” 1522Pembroke . Stonstrett is probably Wool St supra 31. Cf. “highway to a place called Nan Saxby 's Grave where the road from Linton to Balsham crosses at right-angles the Woolstreet road” 1761Pembroke . Both names may refer to burials at cross-roads, but we may note that Mark's Grave is at the junction of the boundaries of four parishes and may contain mearc , 'boundary.'
