Etymology

Upend is Upheme 13thHosp , Upheme in Hamelet 1483 Pat, Upyeme 1477 Madox, Upyng 1669 Moulton, Upend 1612FF , c. 1825 O.S., Upping 1821 Baker. Here lived Geoffrey de Hupheme c. 1250 (Hosp ) and Walter de Upheme in 1298 (Ass ), This would seem to derive direct from OE  upp -hǣme , 'up-dwellers.' The exact significance of in Hamelet is obscure.
