Etymology

Thurlow Hill (lost) is Thirllouhil 1332ElyC , Thrillowe 1360Queens ', Thurlow (e )hill 1465CaiCh , Thirlowhill in le Combes 1494Rental . The first element may be OE  þȳrel , 'pierced,' and the second hlāw , 'hill' or 'barrow.' Cf. Thurland's Drove infra 290 and Durlett (PN W 247), or the name may be identical with Thurlow (Sf), Tritlawa , Tridlauua 1086 DB, Thrillauue c. 1095 BuryDocs, which Ekwall (DEPN) derives either from OE  þrȳþ -hlāw , 'famous tumulus,' or from an OE  *þride - hlāw , 'deliberation-hill.' In view of the complete absence of early forms for Mutlow Hill (supra 138) it may be that here we have an earlier or an alternative name for the hundred meeting-place which is only just outside Fulbourn.
