Etymology

'Manor-farm,' v. beretūn . William de Cahainges held a manor here of the Bishop of Bayeux in 1086 (DB) and Ralph gave Barton church to Merton Priory (t. Hy 2 Dugd vi, 247). The Barton is distinguished also by noting its proximity to Cambridge, Grantchester and Whitwell.
