This must take its name from the family to which Wm Sperling, mentioned in NI (1340), belonged. er regularly becomes ar . The final d is a vulgarism for which Wyld u.s. gives parallels. The modern form is either corrupt or due to a spelling pronunciation of Sperling . Cf. the vulgar Durby for Derby .
