Etymology

OE  Wines -hlāw , 'Wine's hill,' v. hlaw . The name Wine , earlier Wini , somewhat rare before the 10th cent., was common from thence to the conquest. The present is one of the earliest examples of its use. The latest example which has hitherto been observed occurs in the attestation of Asloc filius Wine to a 12th cent. grant to Castleacre Priory (Harl. 2110, 16b ).In place-names the name is widely distributed. Winston (Sf), Winshill (St) and Winsley (Sa) are three examples. The name Win (e )ca contained in Winchendon (q.v.) may be a diminutive of Wine or its corresponding weak form Wina .
