Etymology

The OE  form is the dat. pl. of *Wiðungas , a folk-name in the plur., the w in the form given above being a common error of transcription due to confusion between the similar letters wen and thorn . The origin of the name is unknown but v. Ekwall, PN -ing 67–8 and Zachrisson, Some English PN Etymologies 6. The loss of medial th led to the coming together of two vowels, a fact which long influenced the forms and presumably the pronunciation also. These people must also have given their name to the neighbouring Wingrave. v. infra .
