Etymology

'Double ford' (v. twi-), the reference being to the double ford by which the old road to Cowley crosses the two streams at Twyford Mill. Compare Twyford in Berks, Oxford, Northampton, Derby, and Bede's ad Tuifyrdi . The first DB form keeps the old locative ending, later modified under the influence of the common noun.
