Shelspit (Fms)

Early-attested site in the Parish of Thornborough

Historical Forms

  • Sheldesput 1246 Thornb17

Etymology

The first element is probably the same p.n. found in Shalstone supra . The site forbids any question of a 'shallow', here though the coincidence of a similar name Scheldesput in Cheddington (Mert 382) is to be noted. The 'pit' (v. pytt ) is probably one of the gravel pits of which there are several in the neighbourhood.
