Etymology

v. stoc . The first mention of the family which has given its distinctive name to the manor is in 1255 when Humbert le Pugeis had the custody of the manor (RH i. 34). It may be suspected that the modern pronunciation is purely a spelling one which has replaced the [pjuˑdʒis] that one might have expected.
