Etymology

For the meaning v. stan . The form Stantonbury is a late Corruption, said to be due to the 17th cent. lord of the manor (Sir John Wittewrong) who changed the name from Barry to Bury in consequence of the unearthing of numerous human remains in the parish (VCH). The form -bury however is found as early as c. 1450 in the Lincoln Diocesan Registers.

In 1235 Radulfus Barri held a fee in Stanton, and his name is associated with the place from 1300 onwards, the form Stanton Barry being found as late as Lysons (1806), v. IPN 105.
