Etymology

'Sula's burh.' The pers. name Sūla is not found independently in OE but it may be assumed from Sulham (Sx, Berks), Souldrop (Beds), Souldern (O) and from Sulangraf (BCS 691), sulanford , sulanbroc (BCS 1282). In origin it may be cognate with ON  Súla (Lind, Personbinamn s.n.), cf. ODan  Suli , a nickname related to ON  sūla , 'pillar,' found in Sulby (Nth), and OE  syl , 'pillar,' from the same stem. The vowel was shortened before the cons. group and this pron. is preserved locally though obscured by the present faulty spelling.
