Etymology

The first part is possibly a lost pers. name Lissa found also in Liston (Ess), Lissingtun BCS 1289, Listuna DB, and Lissington (L) and a lost Lissingley in Lissington (DB Lesintone , Danelaw Ch Lissincton ). This must be a pet-form from an OE  name in Hlīs -. Such is not actually found but cf. those in Hrōð -, Sige - with similar meaning. For this difficult name Ekwall notes the possible parallels of Liscombe (BCS 738) in a late copy of a Dorset charter and Liss (Ha). The form in Lynce - is probably due to the neighbouring Linslade .
