Etymology

OE  Sigewines -tūn , 'Sigewine's farm,' v. tun . The name Sigewine , of which only four examples are recorded before the end of the 11th cent., survived at least a hundred years later in the forms Siwin , Sewin . OE  names compounded with Sige ('victory') are not common in local nomenclature. Selmeston (Sx) comes from Sigehelm , Sewardstone Green (Ess) from Sigeweard , Syerscote (St) from Sigeric , Syresham (Nth) and Syerston (Nt) come from Sigehere , Simondshall (Gl) and Symondsbury (Do) from Sigemund .
