Etymology

v. niwe , port . It was already a borough in DB.

Under Hy ii (AddCh 47423–4) Godwin of Neuport or Niwporte attests charters of Gervase Pagnell and the borough is called Neuport Paynelle in 1220 (Bracton). It was part of the Barony of Dudley, which belonged to the Paynel family. Paynel or Pain (n )el is the common form of the second part of the name in the 13th and 14th cents., Panell first appears in 1367 (IpmR) and Pannell in Eliz (ChancP). The form Pagnell is from the Latinised form of the name, Paganellus .
