Historical Forms

  • Whitt Light 1541 LP
  • Whitcliffe Cross 1766 J
  • Whytleyff 1540 LP

Etymology

The modern form is corrupt. The hill and cross must have been named from the white chalk hill in which the cross is cut.Cf. Whitcliff (Gl) which is Whytleyff in 1540 LP. No trace of the pronunciation with short vowel can now be found.
