Historical Forms

  • Elneshegge 1392 Mert
  • Olneshegge 1392 Mert
  • Elvyshegg 1429 Mert 1448 ib
  • Eluyshegge 1489 Mert
  • Ellyshege 1508 Mert
  • Elshege 1539 Mert
  • Elshage 1547 Mert
  • Elsage 1591 Mert

The first two forms would seem to be corrupt and the OE  form of the name to have been Ælfeshecg , 'Aelf's hedge,' though one would have expected this to come out as Alsage , rather than Elsage (v. Introd. xxiii).
