Etymology

OE  āchāmstede , 'oak-homestead,' v. ac , hamstede . For a similar compound in which reference is made to the trees, cf. Berkhampstead (Herts) from beorc . This is a lost parish. The site of the church is marked by ruins still to be found at Moor Farm (HMS 168).
