Etymology

This is a difficult name. No early forms of pond are on record with an a vowel but the history of that word itself is obscure (NED s.v.). Professor Ekwall suggests that this may really contain the word 'pawn,' cf. the 12th cent. Lat. form pandum in NED s.v. and that the name may be descriptive of a place held in pledge or the like.
