Etymology

Probably the 'mead' of Heoruwulf or of Herewulf though the alternative DB form would point equally well to Hereweald .Otherwise that form must be explained as due to early development of epenthetic d. v. mæd . er early became ar , w in the unstressed syllable was lost, and an epenthetic d (not maintained later, at least in pronunciation) developed between r and m .
