Shakespeare Farm

Early-attested site in the Parish of Grendon Underwood

Etymology

The name is not old having replaced the name of the earlier Ship Inn, but it records the tradition first mentioned by Aubrey in the 17th cent. that Shakespeare visited Grendon and that the humour of the constable in Midsummer 's Night 's Dream (sic) was drawn from the village constable.
