Etymology

The modern form is probably artificial, at least in the pronunciation it suggests. As the wood is on the side of a steep hill the second element may be hangra and we may, for the phonetic development, compare Binegar (So). Equally possible, as Ekwall suggests, is OE  healf -æcer , 'half-acre.' v. æcer .
