Etymology

'Goblin's barrow'. v. scucca , hlaw . The 'barrow' or 'hill' is that round which the 500 ft. contour runs. For the idea of such haunted barrows we may compare the phrase in the OE  gnomic verses, draca sceal on hlæwe , 'the dragon must (ever be) in the barrow.' In Shugborough (St) and Shuckburgh (Wa)scucca is combined with beorh .
