Etymology

Roddi - is here clearly OE  rudig , ME  rody , 'ruddy,' and the reference is to the colour of the soil. There are numerous gravel-pits in the neighbourhood. For this colour-application of red and ruddy , cf. the familiar old phrase 'red gold.'
