Etymology

'Eadwulf's beorg.' In interpreting beorg we may note Lipscomb's statement (iii. 349) that 'the Church stands on an eminence which has the appearance of having been either an ancient barrow or perhaps a Roman summer encampment.'For Eadwulf > Edle , cf. Edlingham (Nb). Later the l was lost from the consonant-group dlsb and ds has become dg in the local pronunciation by a common development fully discussed by Zachrisson, Studier i Modern Språkvetenskap , viii. 123–34.The name Eadwulf was common before the Conquest and remained in use until the 13th cent. In place-names it occurs in Edlingham (Nb), Adlington (Ch, La), Edlaston (Db) and, in the Anglo-Scandinavian form Yadulf , in Yaddlethorpe (L).
